Harlan Lake Report

Harlan County Reservoir Lake Report

Water Temp:  63-65 main lake, 65-68 coves.

Largemouth:  Post spawn, the fish are really active.  I caught 2 over 6lbs, another over 5lbs and several 4's and 3's yesterday.  Big Fish are scattered.
Others:  The gills are shallow and being caught on small jigs and worms.  Ive seen several caught by shore anglers.  Some crappie are still up, but most are starting to pull out. Reports are Walleyes are being caught at the west end near Methodist.  Some large eyes have been caught way west near where the river enters.

Enjoy the weekend and stay safe.  Wind is expected to blow from the Southeast all weekend, so expect rough water.

Wild Weather at McConnaughy

Another one (or two) in the books.  The Western Nebraska at McConnaughy this weekend was a tale of 2 vastly different days.  I fished this one alone as my partner had to cancel, so I was at a slight disadvantage.

Saturday was a fun (although very frustrating) day.  Sunny, calm and warm conditions had the fish positioned perfectly for a flipping bite.  I decided the "go for the win" approach was the best gamble, so I targeted largemouth and left the smallies alone.  I did manage to weigh one smallmouth, but only because I had to.  I flipped 4 and 5 inch Moman tubes on a VMC hook and had to experiment quite a bit.  For some strange reason the fish kept coming off.  It started with a nice 3 plus pounder that I tried to boat flip (should have used the net).  Then I had several that either jumped and came off or wrapped around sticks and freed themselves.  I was stunned at one point after I lost an entire limit of 4 pound fish.  I must have looked like a babbling idiot to the family fishing nearby as I constantly griped and talked to myself (after losing each quality fish).  I finally switched up to lighter gauge VMC hook, boated my 3rd, 4th and 5th keeper and decided to leave the fish alone for Sunday.  I ended the day in 2nd with 14.35 pounds and was very pleased with the results, especially considering I lost at least 2 limits of keepers near the boat.  I'll update this post with the official results after they are distributed.  Andy and Adam (Cochrane / Wright) finished first with an impressive 21 pound limit of largemouth (congratulations fellas).

Overnight conditions deteriorated rapidly as we had severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail and even a tornado warning.  Early morning brought vastly different conditions and it rained the entire day (seriously all day).  I ran to the largemouth from day one only to find muddy water that dropped 10 degrees overnight, ouch!  I committed to the fish (they were still there), and decided that when the weather cleared, the fish would be catch-able.  Although the forecast was for clearing conditions in the afternoon, it never materialized.  It rained the entire day (pouring buckets when we left).  It wasn't just rain, it was the kind of rain that finds every crack and seam in your rain gear.  I patiently fished all day, expecting the weather to break, and ended the day with 3 fish.  I had to change things up a bit and switched to a YUM Vibra King tube in order to get bit.  I still feel it was the right call considering the weather forecast and I would make the same call again.  You go with the best information you have and the fish that give you the best chance to win.  I had adjusted to the deeper side of the cover (where I caught my fish) and am confident that the winning fish would have been caught there had the weather cleared.  Congratulations to the winners, they targeted smallmouth and brought in a nice bag with over 16 pounds.

Next up is the Western Nebraska at Harlan County Reservoir, June 1st and 2nd.  I expect Harlan will be a slug fest as it will take over 20 pounds to win (probably to get a check).  We may even see close to a 30 pound sack as the fishing is absolutely incredible.  I will post an updated report later this week.

God Bless and good fishing!

Big Other

Ever wonder what that big strike was?  I often hear statements like, "that one was huge" or "if I could have caught the missed strikes, I'd have won".  Yes, we all miss fish, but sometimes it's not what we envision.  Take for instance, the day I was dragging a tube, trying to get my son into position to cast to a sweet spot.  We were catching bass, so when I felt a tick and set the hook I knew I had a "monster".  I told my son, "if this is a bass, it is a state record.  Well, it was a bass, just not the right kind.  That one weighed a whopping 11 pounds on the scale.  State record?  Not hardly.

If that isn't enough, I recently had a first for me.  I was out with my wife and since it's immediate post spawn, I thought throwing a large swimbait (5.5 inch Berkley Havoc Sick Fish) might present a tempting treat for a big fish.  The first one I caught was this. Not large, but a good start with a 2.5 pounder.  That's when it got interesting.  I felt a solid strike (and I mean solid), set up and this is what I got.

Crappie????  I figured it was a fluke, so I changed locations and kept throwing the swimbait.  That's when I got another, then another (I lost that one).
As for the strikes, the crappie hit that bait harder than the bass.  They crushed it!

Crazy stuff!  So next time your out and you miss a fish, question yourself.  Was it really a bass?  Maybe, maybe not.  The only ones we can really be sure about are the ones in the boat.

Lake Conditions:  Generally clear except for river inflow, lake temp mid 60's main lake, upper 60's to low 70's in backs of coves.

Water! Water! Water!

Just thought I'd weigh-in on the water controversy as it relates to Harlan.  I often complain (privately, more like grumble), about the water fluctuations and the impact on the bass fishery in Harlan.  The Republican River "Water Wars" has absolutely nothing to with fisheries, but rather agriculture.  As fisher-people, we are at the mercy of the decision makers and nothing is more frustrating than getting back something lost and seeing it lost again.  Hopefully not this time!

Harlan County Reservoir has a checkered past when it comes to black bass populations.  Over the years, the quality of the bass fishing has fluctuated, directly coinciding with water levels.  In the 90's, the bass population was solid.  During the early 2000's, when the drought took it's toll, the population plummeted.  But, as it turns out, that was a good thing!  During the low water years, vegetation and trees reclaimed the dry banks, trails were cut by vehicles and people took notice (a few of us did) of the long hidden features such as reefs, rock piles and ditches.  When the water returned, so did the bass.  Now, Harlan is as good a bass lake as any I fish.  Last night was a perfect example.  I had a little time, so I decided to walk the bank and chuck a frog.  Wow, 10 bass in one hour.  Nothing was smaller than 3 lbs and my biggest was solid (6-7 lbs).  Why didn't I take the boat?  Time, but that is a different subject for another day.  Back to the water.

While large scale fluctuations are detrimental to bass populations, they are a constant reminder that life is a delicate balance often affected by factors out of our control.  The recent decision to send the water in Nebraska to Kansas caused a lot of concern amongst fisherman.  Yes, we have absolutely no say in the decision, but we do have an opinion.  I, for one, was very relieved to hear that an agreement has been reached to keep the water in Harlan this year and I applaud the decision makers for compromising.  Our bass fishery is currently in the spawn stage and falling water would devastate this years class of new fish.  My eagerness and anticipation is renewed for the coming year.  Stable water, a solid population of bass and renewed interest WILL result in a great year.

I have already seen club tournaments on the lake, heard "dock talk" at tournaments about Harlan and have seen schedules adding Harlan.  The Western Nebraska Tournament Trail is scheduled to fish June 1st and 2nd and the 2013 Nebraska State High School Tournament is scheduled for July.  Press coverage, especially for the high school tournament should result in significant gains in interest for our lake.  This is great!  The community will benefit, anglers will benefit, we all win.  Yes, fisherman like to keep secrets, but this isn't one of them.  We need interest, lots of it.  The fishing is great and the more people who experience it, the better we manage it in the future.  Tell your friends, tell your non-friends.

I want to recognize one party here.  They usually get criticized, and they are not always right in their approach, but nobody is perfect and no one is always right.  However, they have succeeded here.  The Nebraska Game and Parks has stocked Harlan with Largemouth Bass nearly every year since the water returned.  They are currently working on habitat improvement and are trying to help the fishery here.  No, they can't control the water, but they can influence the habitat.  Additionally, they changed regulations this year to allow 5 fish limits.  This will help.  Nebraska has never had a great bass tournament lake, but Harlan can be that destination.  We have a large number of dedicated bass fisherman in our state and it would be nice to have a tournament lake in our borders.  If your a bass fisherman, send them a letter, email, phone call, something.  Your opinion matters!

Now for the good stuff.  We have tournaments coming up and it is going to be a slug-fest!  Bass will be post spawn, but expect good weights.  I predict the WNTT in June will take 20 plus pounds to win, maybe even to get a check.  Big bass will be over six, probably seven or better and 5 fish limits will be the rule, not the exception.  Of course this is barring some freak June snowstorm or something (this is Nebraska)!  If we have any kind of decent weather, it will take a huge sack to win.  You heard it here.

So if your available June 1st and/or 2nd, check out the Western Nebraska Tournament Trail and enter.  If not, check out the weigh-in at Patterson's Harbor or find the results on the WNTT site, WNTT Facebook or here.  It will be a treat.

God Bless and good fishing!

Home sweet Harlan!

Spent a few days fishing my home lake, Harlan County Reservoir.  I want to make sure I keep this updated weekly (at least) to keep anyone who is interested, updated.  Harlan has been phenomenal the last 2 seasons with regards to black bass!  I went out last week and absolutely "Hammered Them" flipping and swimming a bladed jig.  A cold front brought the bite to a crawl this weekend as water temps dropped 10 degrees and the fish finally got their revenge! Yes, that is a 4/0 wide gap hook embedded in my hand.  I boat flipped a 4 pounder and the bait flew out of it's mouth when it hit the deck.  I will say, it only hurt when we tried to pull it out.  By the way, that line trick doesn't work with a 4/0 hook!  The trip to the ER on a Sunday afternoon ruins a good day of fishing!

Made it back out yesterday to exact my revenge.  Got it, but my picture ended up in the lake with my wife's phone (that'll cost me).  Did start catching some bedding bass as the spawn is in full swing.  Water temps were 62 mid-lake and 65 in the coves.  The picture to the left is not the biggest caught (by far), but a solid representation of what is being caught.  Lot's of 3s, 4's and 5's!

Good Luck and God Bless!

2013 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens #1 Red River, Shreveport, LA

Fishing the Central Opens as a co-angler this year.
My goal is to fish as a pro next year and top 50 co-anglers get priority entry on the pro side next year.
This was an interesting experience!  Not from the fishing perspective, but from the co-anglers perspective.  Fishing as the back-seater in a major pro/co-angler format is a definite eye opener.  It really is luck of the draw in some instances.  I met a few good pro's and am really looking forward to the next event.  I decided to go a little early, but the boater I was supposed to go with didn't show (to the tournament).  Thank you to Jon Englund for letting me hop into his boat on Wednesday.  Thursday was learning day.  Although the pro I was paired with was on a flipping bite, I went for 3 quality bites and only managed 1.  After I finally switched to a senko (to follow-up), I managed one more small keeper to finish the day in 136th place!  OUCH!!!  After a little sulking and a pep talk from my wife (super motivator), I gathered a plan for the next day.  Fortunately, I was paired with a pro, Doug Anderson, who had located an area with quality potential.  I caught my limit (including a 5-6), culled once and lost a solid 3-4 pounder that would have put me in the top 12 (I know, everyone loses fish, but you can't lose 'em at this level).  All said, a success as I moved up to 44th and a spot inside the top 50 (my GOAL).  I still have 2 more to go, but I can live with the results.

My goal for the next open is top 40 (preferably top 12)!

2013 BASS Nation Nebraska State Tournament

Lake of the Ozarks, Osage Beach

This is a solid footing for the year.  Practice started good on the first day with sunny, mild conditions.  Found an A-rig bite (Alabama rig) early, but I was really excited to get on a solid flipping bite in some creeks.  Spent most of the second day trying to get the flipping bite going, but a cold front and cloudy cool conditions shut that down!  So I refocused my attention on the A-rig and found something late.  During the tournament I committed to the A-rig and went for 5 bites. I got 4; however, they were the right 4.  It was a grind, but the quality of the bites allowed me to finish second, earning a much anticipated spot on the state team.  Overall a great tournament as I committed and executed a solid plan.  My buddy Pat Klausen finished first, I was second and overall our team, Big Water Bass, took Team first place honors.

Congratulations to all the guys as this was a great team effort, rewarded with a 42 lb advantage over second place. The full results can be found at Nebraska Bass Federation.  Listed below are the top 12 anglers, qualifying for next years Central Division Regional.  Congratulations to all the State Team qualifiers!

Upgrade!!!

Needed an update to the RIG!  I'm fishing out of a  Cobra 188DC.

I've added several upgrades this year including new tires, a Trollwell (recess tray for trolling motor pedal), a Moosehead rod organizer, Lowrance HDS5 and HDS7 and of course the outboard.  The new outboard is an Evinrude 200E-tec H.O. from Nameoki Village Marine.  We (my lovely wife and I) made the trip to St. Louis, 18 hours round trip, after unsuccessfully trying to find a better deal nearby.  I couldn't be happier!  If you're in the market for a new boat or outboard, give Nameoki a call and ask for Mike.  He has been great to work with and it IS worth the drive.

2013, A New Season

2013 started off with a thud at the first WNTT (Western Nebraska Tournament Trail) event at Glen Elder Kansas.  Although the boat was prepped and the batteries charged, I had a battery go bad early in the morning.  With high winds (35 plus) and no battery, I decided to call it an early day, replace my battery and prep for the Webster event the next day.

The following day (April 7th) was the WNTT event at Lake Webster Kansas.  I fished this with my son Justin.  We finished 4th with 14.04 lbs.  We were .90 behind the leaders and only a pound separated 1st through 5th.  Overall a solid day as all five top finishes fished in the same area.

The Beginning

Last fall was crazy.  I fished the Western Nebraska Tournament Trail event at Harlan County Reservoir with my good friend Cort Heimsoth.  We took first with a 4 fish limit weighing 18.79 lbs, including the Baxter Big Bass kicker of 6.25 lbs.  The event was spectacular as large limits were plentiful.  The event was followed by the passing of my mother, Edith Padgett.  She will be deeply missed.  I am dedicating my 2013 season to her memory as she and my late father (Stephen) were very supportive, often traveling to tournaments with us in the late 90's.
